21 FAMILIES FROM MARIUPOL RECEIVED KEYS TO SOCIAL HOUSING IN KYIV
On December 26, Kyiv opened the first social housing for IDPs from Mariupol. The keys to the rooms for 21 families were handed over by Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko and Mariupol Mayor Vadym Boichenko. This opportunity became possible thanks to the project “IMariupol.Zhytlo” by the Mariupol City Council.
The social housing was created in a building provided by the Kyiv City State Administration. The first floor has now been renovated, with 21 rooms, two kitchens, bathrooms, showers, a children's room and a coworking space. Among the first recipients of housing are families of Ukraine's defenders, former prisoners of war and families with children.
Our country and our citizens are currently going through difficult times. Only by working together can we overcome these challenges. Kyiv provides extensive support to internally displaced persons who need help and protection. We do our best to ensure that people have access to education and healthcare. This project is one of the opportunities to solve the problem of housing for IDPs
Kyiv is one of the largest regions where IDPs from Mariupol live. Therefore, after the successful implementation of the project in Dnipro, it was decided to expand it to the capital.
263 families have already received their own housing in Dnipro. Now the first families have their own homes in Kyiv. And this is just the beginning. In total, we plan to provide housing for over 200 families from Mariupol in the capital. I would like to thank the team of Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko, Donetsk Regional State Administration, Rinat Akhmetov Foundation and all the partners who made our initiative a reality. This project is an example of unity and cooperation
Windows and electrical networks were replaced, rooms were equipped with furniture and appliances, and conditions for people with disabilities were created. The project was also supported by Ukrainian businessman Rinat Akhmetov. His company SCM is a regular partner of the Mariupol City Council in the Mariupol Reborn project. In particular, the Akhmetov Foundation took part in the reconstruction of the dormitories by financing the arrangement of common areas in the dormitories - kitchens, playrooms, coworking spaces and playgrounds.
Since 2022, the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation has been providing comprehensive assistance to IDPs from Mariupol through the YaMariupol centers. When the idea to renovate the dormitories into modern social facilities came up, we immediately supported this initiative. We will continue to help in the future to support IDPs
According to Olena Tokareva, director of the Department of Social Protection of the Donetsk Regional State Administration, more than 1.5 million residents of Donetsk region have fled the region due to russian military aggression. Almost 160,000 people have taken refuge in Kyiv.
Mariupol sets an example for other communities in terms of how to deal with people's problems. The opening of social housing is not just another stage, but a continuation of a long path of community support
The “IMariupol.Zhytlo” project involves the renovation of existing buildings into comfortable social housing with all living conditions for IDPs from Mariupol. The first social housing facilities have already been successfully opened in Dnipro, where 263 families currently live. The project was made possible through the cooperation of the Mariupol City Council and the Kyiv City State Administration, as well as with the support of Ukrainian and international partners.
