Adaptation of the military after returning from war is one of the most important challenges for modern society
How can we help veterans return to civilian life?
This issue was the focus of a lecture by Tina Polek, an anthropologist, co-founder of the Center for Applied Anthropology and member of the European Association of Social Anthropologists. The lecture was held as part of the Community Recovery Academy and became a valuable platform for discussing this multifaceted process.
Support at all levels
Tina Polek emphasized that successful reintegration of veterans requires a comprehensive approach. This includes support from both the community and the state. According to the speaker, the adaptation of the military not only affects the quality of their lives, but also becomes the key to the development of society as a whole.
One of the key points was the importance of social interaction. The community should become not only an observer but also an active participant in the reintegration process. As Tina noted, creating a safe environment for veterans, where their experiences are heard and accepted, is a top priority.
Military as a resource for development
Special attention was paid to the view of veterans not only as people who need help, but also as a valuable resource for society. Their experience, discipline, leadership skills, and ability to work in a team can be the basis for building strong communities.
Psychological support and individual approach
Another important topic was the issue of psychological support. Tina Polek emphasized that each veteran has a unique experience that requires an individualized approach. This is where communities can become a place where the military receive not only practical help but also emotional support.
Community Recovery Academy was founded by the Association of Ukrainian Cities and Mariupol Reborn. The project is implemented with the support of the UK Government under the UK International Development program and the International Republican Institute (IRI Ukraine) in partnership with Metinvest and SCM. The educational partners of the project are Metinvest Polytechnic and the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.
