Workshop for participants in the preparation of municipal managers for the reconstruction period

Representatives of 28 communities of Ukraine have taken the first practical step in preparing for the reconstruction of their own communities. The first module of the educational program of the community restoration school ended with a two-day exit workshop, which combined theory with practice and gave participants invaluable experience on real examples of recovery.

The first day of workshop began in Bucha, where participants were able to get acquainted with specific projects of reconstruction of the city after de -occupation. In the Buchan City Council, key specialists of the city shared experience: Dmytro Hapchenko, Chief Architect Vadym Naumov, Head of Economic Development and Investment Department Tetiana Lypinska and Director of the Center of Verja Lying Olena Renchka.

They told in detail about the restoration of social, communal and housing infrastructure, presented the renovated city master plan, taking into account the consequences of occupation, and shared the experience of memorialization and work with trauma in the community.

The second part of the first day was devoted to work in Kyiv, where the participants together with the mediator Diana Protsenko discussed the mechanisms of interaction with the community and planning further steps. Particular attention was paid to the Fast Recovery Plan presentations, which was developed by the Mariupol City Council, which was presented by the Director of the Department of Transport and Communications Vasyl Klat.

After the presentation of such a rapid action plan, the participants were divided into groups to work on improving individual components, offering innovative solutions and adapting approaches to the specifics of different communities. The result of the teamwork was a joint discussion, during which the participants represented their work and received feedback from experts and colleagues.

The final for the communities was the presentation of Deputy Mayor Serhiy Zakharov, who shared the architectural vision of the restoration of Mariupol, who inspired the participants to reflect on possible ways of reviving their communities.

The second day of workshop was dedicated to working with specialists of the Kyiv-Mohyla School of Vocational and Continuing Education. Under the leadership of the Dean of the Faculty of Tetiana Nagornyak, Associate Professor Iryna Zaichenko and PhD "Political Science" Igor Ozadovskyi, participants worked on an important aspect of community development - their positioning. Experts helped the communities analyze their unique features and strengths to avoid stereotypes imposed from the outside, such as "Southern Palmyra" for Odessa or "first capital of Ukraine" for Kharkiv.

Participants worked in teams to create stakeholders cards, sharing experiences and ideas for attracting different groups of stakeholders in recovery processes. This format allowed participants to look at their territories at different angles and take into account the experience of colleagues when assessing their own capabilities and challenges.

The project is implemented with the support of the UK government under the UK International Development and the International Republican Institute (IRI UKRAINE) in partnership with Metinvest and SCM. The educational partners of the project are Metinvest Polytechnic, National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and Ukrainian School of Management.
