The vision of Mariupol's reconstruction has been presented at Lviv Urban Forum
On 28 June, the Strategic and Architectural Modelling Platform was launched at the Lviv Urban Forum. This is the first of three Mariupol Reborn project centres that are preparing a comprehensive plan for the reconstruction of Mariupol after de-occupation.
Mariupol was cynically destroyed by the russian occupiers. They turned it into ruins, into a city of shot hopes. But thousands of Mariupol residents believe in the liberation of Mariupol and want a better future for it. That is why, while the Ukrainian Armed Forces are bringing the Victory closer, we are developing a plan for the city's recovery after de-occupation. We will use the platform to gather the best international experience and look for modern architectural solutions to rebuild Ukrainian Mariupol after de-occupation as soon as possible
The launch of the Platform was made possible thanks to the support of our partners. Lviv City Council provided the premises. Rinat Akhmetov's company "SCM" financed the renovation and equipment. In total, the Ukrainian businessman will allocate $1.5 million to develop a plan for the revival of Mariupol. This will allow him to form a strong expert team, launch an international training programme, and launch project development centres to further attract investment.
Our task for this year is to create a sustainable ecosystem for the revival of Mariupol: a strong team, platforms and centres of expertise in Dnipro, Lviv and Europe, partnerships with European cities, academies and experts. SCM, as the general partner of Mariupol Reborn, also sees its task as developing and publishing a case study on the development of a roadmap for the revival of destroyed cities based on the principle of build back better
The Strategic and Architectural Modelling Platform began its work with a presentation of the vision of spatial development by four teams of experts engaged with the support of the USAID project "Economic Support to Ukraine". Taking into account the results of dialogue meetings with Mariupol residents, the first visions of approaches to the restoration of Mariupol were presented by Fulco Treffers, a Dutch expert and co-founder of the Ro3Kvit urban coalition, Viktor Zotov, founder of the CANactions educational platform and head of the Zotov&Co architectural bureau, Ukrainian architects Yana Buchatska together with urbanist Serhiy Rodionov, and Victoria Titova, director of the BigCityLab urban bureau.
Each team proposed a unique approach to reviving Mariupol. But urbanists agree that the city's future lies in its "unfolding" towards the sea. The creation of new recreation areas on the shore and the overall increase in the waterfront area will lead to the sustainable development of the new economy. According to the architects, an important component is also the construction of fundamentally new residential neighbourhoods and the de-Sovietisation of infrastructure. In the future, the best proposals will be combined into one document to create a master plan - a detailed urban planning strategy for Mariupol.

Mariupol Reborn is the largest urban revival project in Europe since the Second World War. The project is being implemented by the team of Mariupol Mayor Vadym Boichenko on behalf of Pavlo Kyrylenko, Head of the Donetsk Regional Military Administration, and with the support of the EBRD, USAID pfoject "Economic Support for Ukraine", and SCM. They have joined forces to rebuild Mariupol using modern practices, the latest technologies and best practices.
Together with architects, urbanists and world-class experts, they are working on a clear plan to start rebuilding quickly and efficiently after de-occupation. The circle of partners of Mariupol Reborn continues to expand. In particular, the development of the plan was supported by the municipalities of Lviv, Vilnius, Gdansk, and Utrecht.
