Presentation of a united Mariupol Urban Vision on LVIV URBAN FORUM
On June 28, a traditional annual Urban Forum was held in Lviv, which was attended by representatives of Ukrainian communities, business and international partners. The main topic of discussions were the principles of restoration and sustainable development of Ukrainian communities. A separate part of the event was the open dialogue on the Mariupol Reborn platform.
The basic principles discussed were human-centeredness, adaptability, a projected integrated approach, long-term vision and clear transparency or reporting.
Currently, the only plan in Ukraine that meets these principles and is fully ready for implementation after de-occupation is Mariupol Reborn. The united Urban's Vision, which was presented as part of the forum, not only responds to the main challenges that will stand up to the community when Mariupol will be released, but also gives a clear algorithm that every city can prepare for reconstruction.
A year ago, when we were just starting to think about these questions, no one knew how to implement it properly. Today we have a universal concept that is able to ensure the restoration and sustainable development of the affected areas. From now on, the vision of Mariupol's recovery is not just about us. This is a comprehensive approach to the reconstruction of communities most affected by the war
Urban Vision envisages, first of all, "growth inside", that is building within the existing boundaries of Mariupol. Due to the specifics of industrial planning, areas of the city are detached from each other. The more the number of inhabitants will increase, the closer and compact the areas will become.
There is a step-by-step restoration and development of the transport system, social infrastructure according to the principles of mobility and barrierless - fast and equal access for all residents to all areas of the city.
A significant role in Urban vision is played preserve the memory of the tragic events and the consequences of a full-scale invasion of Russia. Here, the existence, it includes the installation of memorial symbols, a rethinking of the Drama Theater and the Azovstal.
The architects who worked on the Urban vision also emphasized that the reconstruction should take into account the natural factor, since there is a threat that after the end of the fighting, the south and east of Ukraine can become desert zones, due to significant damage caused by the ecosystem.
Mariupol Urban vision will become one of the key elements of modules formation for other communities at the school restoration school, which was invested by Rinat Akhmetov's SCM Group.
The main principle we repelled is what is called Build Back Better. But this is a rather abstract concept. What is "better"? And we agreed that we are forming an urban-vision to answer what is "better". In urban vision we "pushed" the process, so that the city attracted USAID money to create four separate visions. SCM, as a key partner of Mariupol Reborn, financed united four different visions in one, consensus. 4 teams worked together. It was important for us to describe the process of working on a combined urban-vision to create a training course on the basis of this process
The Mariupol Reborn project is implemented by Mariupol City Council with the investment support of Rinat Akhmetov's SCM.
